Cows Milk, Not Such a Good Thing for Humans.

Evidence connecting milk consumption to breast cancer is contradictory, but results of a recent study from Denmark suggest that it may play a role in the increasing incidence of the disease during the past 50 years. In a study involving more than 117,000 women, researchers from the Statens Serum Institute found that height is a risk factor for breast cancer, particularly when it stems from a growth spurt between the ages of 8 to 14.

In Japan, an increase in women’s average heights over the last 50 years may be related to milk consumption. During that time breast cancer incidence doubled from 40 to 80 cases per 100,000 women. The findings were published in the October 14, 2004, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Commenting on the results in the same issue, two experts from Harvard Medical School noted that milk consumption increases circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor 1, a growth hormone associated with higher stature. It isn’t known yet exactly how this might contribute to childhood growth and breast cancer risk, but if milk drinking is to blame for the increased incidence of breast cancer, the amount consumed during childhood could be the key, not the amount adult women are drinking today.

“I recommend against using cow’s milk and products made from milk if you have a personal or family history of eczema, asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, or autoimmunity. If you do drink milk, I urge you to buy only organic brands without the residues of antibiotics and hormones found in conventional brands. In my opinion, those hormone residues may be the factor responsible for increased risks of cancer, especially hormonally driven cancers.” Andrew Weil, M.D.

Milk and lactose intake and ovarian cancer risk in a study from the Swedish Mammography Cohort.

In conclusion, this study provides evidence that high intakes of lactose and dairy products, especially milk, may increase the risk of serious ovarian cancer.

Calcium is important. But milk isn’t the only, or even best source.

It’s not a news flash that calcium is key for healthy bones. Getting enough calcium from childhood through adulthood helps build bones up and then helps slow the loss of bone as we age. It’s not clear, though, that we need as much calcium as is generally recommended, and it’s also not clear that dairy products are really the best source of calcium for most people.

While calcium and dairy can lower the risk of osteoporosis and colon cancer, high intake can increase the risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer.

Plus, dairy products can be high in saturated fat as well as retinol (vitamin A), which at high levels can paradoxically weaken bones.

Good, non-dairy sources of calcium include collards, bok choy, fortified soy milk, baked beans, and supplements that contain both calcium and vitamin D (a better choice than taking calcium alone).

Many vegetables contain more calcium than milk. Some vegetable such as amaranth, radish leaf, mustard greens, shepherd’s purse, yam, celery, cilantro, fennel, perilla leaf, (that wonderful leaf garnish called Shiso that comes with sashimi. Please do it now, eat less meat and eat more vegetables and grains.

Health Benefits of Chocolate

The health benefits of dark chocolate (not white chocolate, or milk chocolate) are becoming well known. Recent findings published by Dirk Taubert, M.D., in The Journal of the American Medical Association, report that dark chocolate is indeed good for you.

Dark chocolate is a rich source of antioxidants which gobble up free radicals, destructive molecules that cause heart disease, and other health issues. Research shows that after a certain age, eating dark chocolate may actually help control mild high blood pressure.

healthy chocolate barThe health benefits of another product are beginning to emerge as well. NCD, or Natural Cellular Defense, is a product designed to remove heavy metals, and various positively charged cells such as arsenic, aluminum, and mercury that accumulate in your body.

If not addressed, heavy metals, and other toxins in the body can attack the body’s defenses and cause headaches, aging, and a lack of energy.

So wouldn’t it be great if we could combine the benefits of NCD, with the great flavor, and natural benefits of dark chocolate into one convenient product.

chava healthy chocolateSomeone has done just that! Chava Vital Chocolate, from Waiora, combines the benefits of the natural antioxidants found in dark chocolate, with all the healthy effects of NCD. The result? Well the result is very healthy chocolate!  Finally we have a good excuse to indulge our craving for chocolate.

Is Acupuncture an Effective Treatment for High Blood Pressure?

Q. Bill Fletcher from Laguna Niguel Asks:

Is acupuncture an effective treatment for high blood pressure?

A. - From Dr. Anna

In Traditional Chinese Medicne there are three types of hypertension:
1. liver yang excess,
2. liver and kidney yang dificiency,
3. interior retention of phlegm dampness,
The symptoms range from headache, dizziness, vertigo, chest fullness, ringing in ear, face red, palms and soles feel hot, dry mouth, lowerback and knee weakness, quick to anger, heart palptations, listless, insomia, frequent nightime urination, lower extremities feel cold, and swollen legs.

Treatment1: Liver yang excess: this type is mostly caused by emotional/mental stress and is the easiest to treat.

Treatment 2: Liver and kidney yang deficiency: this type needs a little longer time to treat. Need to restore liver and kidney function back to normal. Treat with acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs.

Treatment 3: Interior retention of phlegm dampness: this type cause by poor diet. The treatment will takes longer time

Even if you buy organic, wash your fruits and veggies!

As part of your healthy lifestyle, washing your fruits and vegetables is essential. Even if you buy organic, the handling and packaging of your fruits and vegetables may introduce a variety of contaminants. Once someone has eaten contaminated food, the infection can be passed person-to-person, by hand-to-mouth contact. The bacteria are most often spread from person to person.
Help keep yourself and your family healthy by washing your produce before you serve it.

In May and June 2011, a different and mysterious strain of E. coli has led to the deaths of 25 people in northern Germany and one in Sweden. It has sickened more than 2,600 others in Germany alone. In 2006, tainted spinach led to the deaths of three people and sickened 204 people. The list goes on.

I use SunSmile Fruit & Vegetable Rinse made by Sunrider. It is an effective formula that rinses away pesticides, insecticides, dirt, waxy coatings, oily substances, pollution and other contaminants.
The primary cleansing agent in SunSmile is decyl polyglucose — a safe, edible, biodegradable compound derived from cornstarch and coconut oil, containing no harmful residues.
It is a Multi-use product you can also use it to clean your countertops and cutting boards. SunSmile cleans delicate produce like broccoli heads, field greens, and herbs—yet is strong enough to remove waxy coatings and sticky glazes. You will be stunned to see the dirt and residue left at the bottom of the rinse. An inexpensive alternative solution is a gallon of water and a few tablespoons of white distilled vinegar.

While E. coli is most often found in meat, it is not limited to it. The bacteria are also found in unpasteurized milk and apple cider, ham, turkey, chicken, roast beef, sandwich meats, raw vegetables, cheese and contaminated water.
In September 2006, the E. coli outbreak that killed three people and made more than 200 ill was traced to spinach grown in California. Bean and alfalfa sprouts have also been recalled due to E. coli contamination.
Fruits and vegetables that grow close to the ground are susceptible to E. coli contamination if, for example, improperly composted cattle manure is used as a fertilizer.
E. coli, salmonella and cryptosporidium can also be found in unpasteurized juice. Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are encouraged to drink pasteurized juice or boil unpasteurized juice before consuming it.

You can’t see it, smell it or taste it. But food or water tainted with certain strains of E. coli bacteria can leave you fighting for your life, especially if your immune system is compromised or you’re very young or very old.
Proper food handling techniques can go a long way towards preventing exposure to E. coli. An easy way to prevent cross-contamination is to start with a clean work area, including your hands, and prep all of your fruits and vegetables before you even take the meat out of the refrigerator. Wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly before cooking or cutting them. Think about what is on the outside of an avocado or cantaloupe or mango. If you do not wash it first then when you cut through the skin any bacteria on the surface can transfer from your knife into the fruit.

Drink only pasteurized milk or cider. Drink water from a supply known to be safe.

Since most cases of E. coli contamination are passed from person to person, good personal hygiene is critical to protecting yourself: It’s impossible to know who/what has touched the food and where it’s been.

Grocery stores do not sterilize their produce; you are responsible for following a good wash cleaning procedure.

Lastly, stay healthy and keep your chigong (energy) healthy and strong so your body can fight back. That is your best defense for what life throws at you.

Peace and health,

Anna

Back Pain Relief

Before my first treatment at New Life Healing Center, my lower back was a constant issue. I was not able to sit down for a meal without feeling strong pain. I had to take my back into consideration for every aspect of my life. After the first few treatments, I began to regain strength in my back. Now that I have been undergoing treatments for about two months, I feel great. I can exercise regularly, I sleep better, and I actually feel healthier. Thank you Anna for helping me regain control of my health.

Sincerely,

-Ken, Dana Point
