New Life Healing Center Testimonial from an Exercise Therapist

I would highly recommend Anna for anyone who wants to improve their health and quality of life.  She is very intuitive, knowledgeable, and really cares about helping you get better. It is amazing how much she knows about your body and organs when you come in. Anna has a very gentle touch and is gifted at what she does. Her needles do not hurt at all. I love the fact that whenever I come in she takes her time with me, never rushing me out. It is very peaceful and relaxing and I always feel so much better afterward. She personally helped me get rid of ovarian cysts in less than four months through herbs and acupuncture as well as lose 10 pounds before my wedding. I continue to see Anna and I can’t say enough great things about her.

Ginger’s Health Benefits: Fighting Pain, Inflammation, Arthritis

Ginger: I use it everyday. It is an important ingredient of several herb prescriptions I create for my patients. Often I will have it sliced or chopped and tossed in with fresh vegetables, soups, protein, or tea. I read the article below, and believe it covers many good points about treating inflammation.  It also provides insights into ongoing research that supports the ability of ginger to treat inflammation with the same “medicinal potential” of common painkillers like Advil, Motrin, Aleve and even aspirin. This is a wonderful, natural alternative that is very effective while being beneficial to the body on many levels.

A bit of ginger is like a healthy dose of fresh air, water and sunshine in one bite. Enjoy it often; your body will thank you.

Please feel free to call me if you would like to incorporate ginger and other healthy choices, treatments, and practices into your mind and body.

Peace and health, Anna Chang PhD, L.Ac.

Fragrant herbs and spices such as ginger are some of the most powerful weapons we have to help combat inflammation from a nutritional perspective. Inflammation causes or contributes to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease,Alzheimer’s disease and many types of cancer, as I wrote in a recent review that appeared in Nutrition in Clinical Practice. Aromatic ginger is a superstar of traditional medicine in Asia, where it has been treasured for thousands of years for its amazing flavors and impressive health benefits. Ginger Used as Painkiller for Arthritis Ginger contains dozens of the most potent inflammation fighting substances known, phytonutrients called gingerols. Japanese researchers writing in the Journal of Medicinal Food explain that red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Rubra) is used in Indonesian traditional medicine as a painkiller for arthritis.

Patient Testimonial: Back Pain

I’m a 50-year old male “weekend warrior”. I work during the week at a desk, and on weekends play hockey against much younger guys.

Last year I hurt my lower back playing hockey, and sat out for a couple of months while taking bi-weekly treatments from a chiropractor. Finally I was able to return to hockey, but on the first play my lower back went out again.
I was extremely frustrated, and feared my playing days were over.

I was referred to try acupuncture with Anna, and agreed only out of desperation. I’ve had a lifelong fear and loathing of needles.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was definitely surprised when Anna inserted over 20 needles in me during my first session and I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. More remarkable was the almost instant healing effect on my lower back that resulted. In my second session, while taking my pulse, Anna diagnosed a chronic shoulder pain I had never mentioned. It was corrected in one treatment.

My mind now more open to acupuncture, Anna and I began working on restoring my respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems to normal functioning.

The most remarkable outcome was my lifelong asthma condition reduced to almost non-existent levels. During past five years of playing hockey, I was conditioned to using my inhaler after every shift. After a short series of treatments with Anna, I was able to play an entire game without once thinking of my inhaler.

The Ten Questions.

The Ten Questions have been an integral part of TCM diagnosis for centuries. The first recorded list of ten questions was compiled by Zhang Jie-bing in 1624 during the Ming dynasty. The exact phrasing and number of questions has varied over the years, but the following are general questions that a patient may expect to be asked on a visit to a TCM practitioner, and examples of what type of information he or she is looking for.
1. Cold and Heat, Chills and Fever – whether the patient always feels cold, has cold hands and feet, cannot tolerate cold, or whether he or she generally feels too warm. In an acute illness, the severity of chills and fever, and whether the fever fluctuates with time of day.
2. Perspiration - night sweats or spontaneous perspiration without physical activity, a high fever with no perspiration, or sweating of palms and soles of the feet.
3. Pains in Head and Body- the location of pain, such as lower back, knees, chest, front, sides or back of the head; if there is an uncomfortable feeling of fullness in the chest or abdomen; the type of pain (sharp and piercing or dull and aching); and whether the pain is relieved or worsened by application of cold, heat or pressure. Dizziness would also fall under this category.
4. Urination and Bowel Movements - frequency of urination and bowel movements (times per day), constipation, diarrhea, frequent copious clear urination, scanty dark urination, incontinence, or needing to get up one or more times during the night to urinate.
5. Diet and Appetite – lack of appetite, constant insatiable hunger, bloating after eating, desire for hot or cold foods, craving certain tastes such as sweet, sour, salty or spicy, habitual intake of sugar, caffeine or alcohol. This category also includes experiencing a particular taste in the mouth such as metallic or bitter.
6. Thirst - excessive thirst, lack of thirst, thirst with no desire to drink, or constant desire for cold drinks.
7. Mental or Emotional State - TCM recognizes that the emotional and physical are interrelated, and emotional states such as grief, anger, worry or fear can affect the patient’s physical well-being. Conversely, physical disharmonies can bring about emotional responses.
8. Hearing – tinnitus (ringing or other sounds in the ears), sudden or gradual hearing loss
9. Sleep - excessive desire to sleep, difficulty falling asleep, or waking in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back asleep. Nightmares or dream-disturbed sleep are also included in this category.
10. Gynecological Issues - women would be asked whether the menses are early or late, irregular, if the flow is light or heavy, if the color is light or dark, and if they experience pain or cramps during menstruation.
In addition to asking these or similar questions, the TCM practitioner will want to know about the patient’s medical history and previous diseases or ailments, and will employ observation of the patient’s overall demeanor, speaking voice, energy level, coloration, eyes, and other physical characteristics, as well as pulse and tongue diagnosis, in order to make an accurate diagnosis and choose the most effective treatment.

Lighting
Sunlight will give the most accurate color of the tongue body and coat. If sunlight is not available, use a second light source such as a small flashlight to compare the tongue color to the original light source.

Position
The tongue should be extended in a relaxed manner, and should not be held out for an extended duration.

Food and Drink
Food and drink, such as coffee, green tea, and candy may alter the color of the tongue coating.

Introduction

Dr. Chang - Acupuncture and Herb treatment - Laguna Hills

Dr. Chang

The tongue has many relationships and connections in the body, both to the meridians and the internal organs. It is therefore very useful and important during inspection for confirming TCM diagnosis. It can present strong visual indicators of a person’s overall harmony or disharmony.
The tongue has a special relationship with the Heart, in that the Heart opens to the tongue. The tongue is said to be an “offshoot” of the Heart, or “flowers” into the Heart. Continue reading Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine – Part 1
